Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil – For Massage and Cooking

What is the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil?

Mustard is quite commonly used as a condiment for fast foods as well as an ingredient in a variety of cuisines throughout the world. In the subcontinent, mustard oil is commonly used to prepare a number of dishes but the use of mustard oil as a cooking oil is regulated in both the EU and the US. This is due to the presence of an omega 9 fatty acid (erucic acid) whose effects on rat has been noted as causing buildup of cardiac lipid thus posing a health risk. However further research found that rats faced the same problem with other vegetable fatty acids.

So while the use of Essential Mustard Oil is rated as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the US FDA (Food and Drugs Administration), expressed mustard oil was considered to be toxic and was banned for human consumption. Currently, expressed mustard oil is only considered safe for use as a massage oil.

However, it is still commonly used as a cooking and pickling oil although it is labeled for external use only. People from the subcontinent prefer the extra pungency and flavor that expressed mustard oil such as the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil has. Many consider centuries of use of mustard oil in the subcontinent to be sufficient evidence to its lack of toxicity to humans. Even so, the common practice is to heat the mustard oil until it starts to smoke before allowing it to cool as this helps remove the pungent taste and also rids the oil of omega acids.

Contents

There are no issues with regards to the ingredients in the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil. Some resources suggest that it contains TBHQ (tert-Butylhydroquinone), a preservative commonly used in vegetable oils. Both the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and US FDA have deemed it safe for use at the concentration allowed in food.

Why opt for the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil?

The Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil is great for many purposes, you can use it as a massage oil, use it on your hair as a conditioner, add it to food for flavor or use it to cook with. You can also rub this oil onto your skin to soften and moisturize it. Studies have even indicated that it is suitable for baby massage although sesame oil has been shown to be better than mustard oil for this use.

The Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil is essentially unadulterated but perhaps contains preservatives to extend shelf life.

Benefits

This is pure mustard oil and is therefore quite strong, you would likely wish to use it moderately or mix it with other oils to dilute the taste. You may use the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil for your hair, skin, as a cooking oil, as a pickling oil or as a massage oil.

Drawbacks

Expressed oil has not yet been removed from the list of cooking oils banned from sale in the USA and the EU too despite research pointing out that its toxicity is not established.

Canola oil also contains erucic acid but in a lower concentration and continues to be sold and used in both the EU and USA. In fact, some studies suggest that the use of mustard oil such as the Dabur Pure Indian Mustard Oil may be beneficial with regards to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
